The World Famous Mr. Supreme

At a gentlemen’s club called 700, it was another gig for Mr. Supreme with all the usual suspects. He has rocked parties all over the world and prides himself on versatility. When you have the crates to accommodate and the ability to read what people need,no venue is out of your league. Preme stays current with the younger generation because every single released is directed to his doorstep — the labels know who is really working out there. But he will never neglect the loft disco that he was raised on, and with just a seconds notice Preme can launch into a set to appease an entirely different genre. It’s as easy as buttoning his fly for this World Class Dj — Mr. Supreme.

On this specific night, from the shadows of his Dj booth a tall cat emerged with the unmistakable swagger of the NBA basketball players that frequent the establishment. He asked Preme: “Can I get on?” The response from the world-class Dj circa 1976 is evidence of how he treats his craft.

“Do I come to your game, jump out on the floor in front of all those people and ask, can I play? Man, come one, I’m working. This is what I do.”

It may seem like different strokes, but a professional is a professional, and after playing every circuit the club scene can throw at him his operations of heavy machinery is unrivaled. Yet you may not know he started his own record label at 23 years old. He led the acid-jazz movement with DJ Sureshot as the Sharpshooters (by combining rare grooves and hip-hop) through the early 1990s. He currently owns more than 75,000 records and has the reputation nationally that if you need an out of print record sleeve or piece of vinyl you go find Preme. This begat his label – Conception Records – where Preme’s prodigy JAKEONE began his career (he now has featured beats on the new FREEWAY, 50 Cent and M.O.P.)

He has rocked grime crowds in London and break-fanatics in Toyko. He has produced over 70 albums across every genre you can think of, which kept him on the road doin’ the parties that made him what he is today. He has played parts in several movies, created original scores for ESPN’s Sportcenter and HBO’s The WIRE and The Sopranos. Not to mention a master certificate in studio sound engineering, and a background in breakdancing starting his own crew The Circuit City Breakers in the early 1980s. His group the Incredicrew was nationally exposed by 1988 as Preme was still a teen. And now? He plays 5-nights a week in Seattle, is starting the SUNDAY DINNER podcast w/ Soul Gorilla, just came off the Scion HEIST Tour with Lumin, Le Castle Vania and More and before that it was Vegas for the Whoo Kid party that put Supreme high on the billboard with the Strip overlooking… In essence, many have said it, but Dj Mr. Supreme really is your favorite Dj’s favorite Dj.

The natural inclination is to say how can a guy who has been down since many of today’s club-goers were not even born, still stay relevant? Because he never got dusty like the vinyl he collects. As the booking agents find top-40 play list deejays saturating the market and posing as the genuine article, the need for Djs like Preme becomes more evident. He will tell you about the next artist to break commercially (J Electronica you have been chosen NEXT) or about his limited run Sandinista Mixtape that took Japan by storm years ago. He just finished the release of re-edit LOVE SAVES THE DAY, made in the Czech Republic, 2000 copies and all of them sold in less than a week.

You have to know where the music has been to know where it is going. Which is why Mr. Supreme guides Soul Gorilla’s musical direction since 2003.
